rollerskater_01If you consider this boy on the left to be part of your “family” you’ll be there when he needs help. As the father of this boy I’d do anything to be there if he were ever in trouble. And if I couldn’t help him I know that our extended “family” would look out for him. But if none of us could solve his problem we’d be hoping that some other people out there would step up to help him.

When I hear about a child who is an Aids orphans or lives without enough food, clean water or medicine,  I often think how horrible I would feel if it was my child or one of the children in my family. Then sometimes I try to think of the child in need as part of my family and it’s overwhelming. Once I allow myself to feel a connection to the child I desperately want to help. Then it seems the only way I can move on with my life is to loosen my sense of connection to the child.

So this is the choice I need to make and I think all of us need to make:

Do I consider all people on planet earth to be part of my “family?”

Or, does my concept of “family” only include a small group of people?

family6_0103Whether our reasons for our concept of “family” comes from a belief that all people have a common Creator or all people are connected through our common connection to the earth, our decision about who is “family” will make a big difference to people who are in desperate need for a bigger extended family.
